Yeah I know you are aware of Burj Khalifa, Burj ul Arab and Dubai Mall. What else you should visit, in less spending where you don't have to buy a ticket, you are as good as to bear transportation only. I will guide you for all that, don't worry !
Very first thing you should enjoy in Dubai is Metro ! purchase a NOL Card from any metro station and Ride On ! Do one full trip from Jabel Ali to Rashidiya on Red Line and same for Green line. Try to be on the first or last seat (don't goto Gold Class, save money).
2nd thing, you need to choose the metro stations where you should leave ! starting from Jabel Ali side, your first stop should be Ibn Batuta Metro station.
Leave the metro and visit this awesome mall, (yeah its free to enter and wonder around and take pics) one the most famous and most visited mall of UAE because of its unique style, accommodating many countries' style in shops and over all. If you are a movie-freak, there's a iMax cinema for you.

Ok, so done with Ibn Batuta ? Collected a few memorable pics ? now head to metro station again, ride on ! your next stop would be "DAMAC Properties". Now get ready to have some good walk.
You goto either side of this metro station and you would find Lake on JLT Exit side and Sea on JBR Walk side. Do walk around, take some awesome pics, enjoy the lake and yatches floating around in sea at JBR Walk Side.
Let's get back to metro and continue our journey. Your next recommended stop is now, Mall of Emirates". Mall of Emirates, often pronounced with its short name, MOE, is one of the biggest malls of UAE. Main attraction at Mall of The Emirates is "SkiDubai" which is a kind of big glacier, with letting the people allow to ski and enjoy snow in middle desert. You should not spend more than 2 hours here if not intended to do shopping.
Had some pics ? may be a cup of coffee ? OK we are now good to go forward. Ride on the metro again, sit back and relax now for sometime. Our next stop is only 3 stations away but this will take a bit of time. Don't forget to witness sky-scrapers of Dubai when riding the metro. Your next stop is, "Burj Khalifa, Dubai mall".

I don't think I need to add long details about these as they are the most famous and visited place of Dubai. Tallest building of the World, Burj Khalifa, Souq al Bahar, Dubai Aquarium, Fountain Show, and Dubai Mall Waterfall are the places you should visit here. Grab a few pictures and record the movie of Dubai Fountain show. All of its, mentioned, is free here.

Enough for this place, I'm sure you have now a good collection of sky scrappers' photographs within this Downtown area. Let's get back to our "Free / Cheap Trip" of Dubai. Ride back to Metro and leave the metro on the metro station named, "Burjuman metro station". There is now a tricky part. You are, till now, riding on Red Line Metro, its time to change it now. On Burjuman metro station, you have to change the platform and be on the platform for Green Line metro towards "Creek". Ride on this metro and leave it at "Dubai Healthcare Metro Station". From here, its almost 300 - 400 meters walk-able distance to a mall, "Wafi". Do visit this mall, see the Egyptian Style statues, pyramid and market. A must visit place here is "Souq Khan Marjan". Souq Khan Marjan is a typically Egyptian Style market within this mall. You will find some traditional jewelry and clothing shops inside here.
